After visiting Duck N.C. we headed

for Williamsburg Va.

We first had a look around the

archaeological dig at the site of the

original Fort James, the original

English settlement in North America

(1607).  Jamestown, just south of

Williamsburg, was known to be the

earliest British settlement, but

surprisingly, the location of the

original fort was only discovered in

1994.  The fort had been built over

so many times, including during the

Civil War, it's location had been

forgotten.

Colonial Williamsburg is a

reconstruction of the early capital of

the Virginia colony.  We spent a day

here, starting with a showing of the

very dated and cheesy film,

"Williamsburg: Story of a Patriot",

starring Jack Lord (of Hawaii Five-O

fame).  Astonishing that the

Williamsburg folk thought it

worthwhile to digitally restore this

film.  I admit that it stands up quite

well, for something that is now

nearly 50 years old, but a remake

would be well worth the money.

Throughout the day, actors played

out scenes leading up to the

declaration of American

independence.  At one point,

Andrew and I were recruited to play

members of a military tribunal

deciding the fate of a local Royalist.

We had lunch at the King's Arms

tavern and in the afternoon visited

with the blacksmith, the silversmith

and the book-binder.  Later we

attended a recreation of an 18th

century court.
