DISPATCHES -- Fall 96

Back again in August

Andrew has always liked our camping trips, but he really, really like the Pinery when we visited in July. We went back again in August, for 4 days and this time we brought along my old backpacking tent. Both kids had a ball playing in it during the day, and to our amazement Andrew announced that he wanted to sleep in it. Now, Andrew is not always the most bravehearted little guy, but this was something he wanted to try, even though he doesn't like being outside our large dome tent after dark, even if mum and dad are there with him.

He did it. Andrew spent 2 nights alone in the small tent, without any problem whatsoever.

Fishing is something that I have avoided like the plague for pretty well my whole life. I don't think I have ever owned a fishing rod, and any time I have borrowed one I saw it as an excuse to sit back and relax..actually catching a fish would just interfere with anotherwise enjoyable pastime. Andrew and Colin have a different idea. Here you can see Colin fishing with some home made equipment [do you need a licence for a fishing stick?] and the odd expression on his face probably belies the fact that he is overjoyed because he can see some fish in the river..they're only minnows, but don't tell Colin.

Andrew, on the other hand saved up his allowance for about a month so that he would have enough money to buy his own fishing rod at Canadian Tire. So far neither one has caught anything...but one day they will. What am I supposed to do then?
