Heidi took the kids to her Mom's cottage in Haliburton for a few days this summer, but I didn't make it up at all this year. I do enjoy going up in the fall, because the colours are so magnificent. Usually though, the colours peak just before Thanksgiving....not this year. The show was spectacular.
The cottage is on the Kinesis River, about a kilometer from Halls Lake [which is half way between Minden and Dorset]. There is a ridge which runs behind the cottage with some well maintained snowmobile trails making hiking quite easy. This picture was taken from a look out point at the top of the ridge.

Even though it was late in the season, the kids wanted to go canoeing. Andrew and I had rented a canoe for an our during one of our trips to the Pinery in the summer, but Colin had never been before. Because of this, Colin has no idea how tippy a canoe with a squirmy 3 year old on board can be...and I didn't really want him to find out be ditching into the cold October water of the Kinesis River. I was a little nervous.
There was no need. Everything worked out fine. I put Andrew at the front, so that he could "help paddle", [yeah, right], and told Colin to sit perfectly still in the middle and never to let go of the gunnels. He did exactly as he was told and we had a great 45 minute paddle up and down the river. Here is a shot of the three interepid voyageurs.
