Way back in the spring, we went through an experience which I believe everyone in Oakville, south of the QEW, has gone through at some point. We had water seeping into our basement.
When it happens, there isn't much you can do to stop it, at least there isn't much you can do without spending several thousands of dollars to have someone come in to excavate around your house. We lived with the seepage until May, when I came up with a plan.
I believed that the problem might have been that the weeping tiles around the foundation of the house had become plugged over the years. If the weeping tiles were plugged, they wouldn't drain water away from the foundation as quickly as it accumulates in the spring, leading to my water problem.
My plan was to dig down to the weeping tiles in a strategic location at the back of the house, remove one of the tiles, and then clean out the remaining tiles by snaking a hose through the tiles along the length of the house. Once cleaned, I reasoned, water wouldn't accumulate around the foundation, and therefore wouldn't be able to seep through any cracks in the foundation walls into my basement. Piece of cake.
Here is a picture of me, nearing the bottom of my hole.
How can you be sure it's really me down there and not some poor stand-in hired to do the dirty work for me? Do you really think I would pay to send a bald guy down a hole when I could do it myself? Get real.
My plan worked fine, except for one thing. The weeping tiles were as clean as a whistle.
