Heidi't mum has a cottage near Hall's Lake in Haliburton, and most years we try to get up for the Thanksgiving weekend. This year, I took a week off work and we spent most of it at the cottage.
The cottage is about half-way between Minden and Dorset and we have visited each of these villages many times. One thing we had never done was to climb the old fire tower situated on a large hill behind Dorset. This year we did.
The fire-tower hasn't been used for years, fires are monitored by airplane now and it just doesn't make sense to send some poor bugger up into a tower for weeks on end to watch for smoke. Nevertheless, the tower has been maintained for visitors.
We climbed it on a chilly, windy day in October. The leaves had past their prime colours, but we cabin fever had begun to set in, and we needed a break. Here is a picture of Heidi and the boys near the top of the tower...did I say it was windy?

Afterwards we decided to hike down the hill into Dorset, rather than taking the car back. It was a great hike. Here is picture of Andrew, Colin and I taking a break on the rocks beside the trail.
