  1. Malta was controlled by the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (aka Knights Hospitaller) from 1530-1798. They were a quasi-religious, quasi-military, quasi-aristocratic bunch and their supreme leader was known as the “Grandmaster”. ↩︎
  2. Ġgantija in particular is unbelievably old. It was constructed about 5,500 years ago, making it the second oldest man-made religious structure we know of. For comparison, Stonehenge is about 5000 years old, and the Egyptian pyramids are newer. ↩︎
  3. Supposedly, the cave where Calypso kept Ulysses imprisoned for 7 years is on the Maltese island of Gozo. It isn’t accessible, so we went to some others. ↩︎
